Rotifers: An ideal food source for aquatic farming
Rotifers are tiny planktonic organisms belonging to the Rotifera family. They play a key role in the aquatic ecosystem and are widely used in aquariums, aquaculture, and the rearing of fish and invertebrate larvae.
🦠 Why use rotifers?
✅ Microscopic size (50-200 µm) : Ideal for feeding fish and coral larvae.
✅ Easily digestible : Suitable for marine and freshwater organisms.
✅ Rich in proteins and essential fatty acids (DHA, EPA) : Promotes healthy and rapid growth.
✅ Excellent for raising fry and filter-feeding invertebrates .
How to cultivate rotifers?
💧 1. Prepare the culture medium
- Use seawater or salinized freshwater (~15 to 25 ppt).
- Maintain a temperature of 22 to 28°C for optimal reproduction.
- Add light aeration to avoid stagnation.
🌿 2. Feed the rotifers
- Their main food source is phytoplankton (Nannochloropsis, Tetraselmis, Dunaliella) .
- Alternatively, use substitutes such as baker's yeast or micro-particles enriched with DHA/EPA.
🔄 3. Harvesting and maintenance
- Filter some of the culture daily to avoid overcrowding.
- Renew approximately 20-30% of the water volume every week to maintain optimal quality.
- Maintain a density of 100 to 500 rotifers/ml for continuous production.
